Royal
Tunbridge Wells developed originally in the 17th century, as a spa
town in the vicinity of the chalybeate springs found in the area. The
famous Pantiles colonnaded walkway in the town was frequented by
fashionable society, including Royalty. The town really developed as a
residential location in the 19th century and today it is still a sought
after commuter and residential area, lying close to the A21 and rail
services on the Hastings-Charing Cross/Cannon Street line.
It is the administrative hub of the
borough as well as a locally important commercial, distribution,
shopping and tourism centre. As an indication of the borough's
prosperity, unemployment here is traditionally below the county average.
