Places to VisitThe University of Cambridge physically dominates the city, the 31 colleges and university buildings and chapels being centrally located, presenting a unique history of architecture reaching back over 700 years. Visitors are usually welcome to walk through the courts and visit the chapels except during the examination period (early April to late June).

King's College Chapel is a perfect example of perpendicular splendour best viewed from The Backs (of the colleges) - the lawns, gardens and open spaces stretching along the river bank - or from a punt on the Cam itself.

Other parks and gardens include Castle Mound, the grassy motte of William the Conqueror's castle; the outdoor pool and lock keeper's garden at Jesus Green; Lammas Land playground and paddling pool, and the huge, tranquil Botanic Gardens of Trumpington Road. Other historic buildings in the city include Holy Sepulchre, one of only four round churches in England; the University Church of Great St Mary's offering panoramic views, and the Anglo Saxon St Bene't, the oldest church in the county.
